About the artwork

The impressive sculptural clock is a collaboration of two French artists.
The finely cast and patinated bronze figure is by one of the most important sculptors of the 19th century, Albert Carrier-Belleuse. He is best known for his monumental candelabras gracing the stairs of the Paris Opera and his lively and naturalistic marble and bronze statues which earned him the medal of honour of the Salon de Paris.

About the artist

The beauty and sophistication of Carrier-Belleuse’s figure is matched by the impressive technical achievement of the unique conical pendulum escapement by Eugène Farcot. He was the most renowned 19th century maker of conical pendulum clocks and exhibited one example of this magnificent clock at the Paris Exposition of 1867.
