About the artist
Charles March, count of March and Kinara, began to show interest in photography at the age of twelve. At the age of 17, he was given the opportunity to gather experience in the film industry on the set of Stanley Kubrick’s movie ‘Barry Lyndon’. After working as a documentary photographer in Africa for several months, March began to work under the pseudonym Charles Settrington and became one of the leading advertising photographers in England, working for renowned brands such as Benson & Hedges, Glenfiddich and Levi’s.
In 1991 he moved away from the typical glossy photographs which dominated the advertising industry at that time and struck a new path. His series ‘Nature Translated’ consists of trees and places which he had frequented often during his childhood. March’s deliberate camera shake creates an effect which lets the pictures appear as if they were painted. With this work he completed his seamless transition from commercial photographer to artist.
