About the artist

Barry Flanagan studied architecture at the Birmingham College of Art and Crafts and later completed his degree in sculpture at the St. Martin’s School of Art in London in 1966. At the beginning of his career he alternated between abstract and figurative images and a variety of techniques, nevertheless maintaining a consistently ironic attitude towards sculpture.
The Welsh sculptor is best-known for his bronze statues of hares, which were first exhibited in the 1980’s. Flanagan sees the hare as a symbol of life and as a replacement for the human body in his works. His animal sculptures, which likewise include horses, refer to the world of myths.
