About the artist

The Milan based group of designers named Memphis – which emerged around the designer and architect Ettore Sottsass – caused a global stir in the fields of furniture, textile and ceramic design in the 1980s. Memphis freed international design from its tight industrial bond, which was dominated by a functionalist approach up to that point. Instead the group’s drafts featured sharp colours, daring combinations of materials and forms as well as a carefree and cheerful handling of décor and ornament.
