About the artist
The Italian artist is an autodidactic painter and received much praise in his childhood for his painting, but during his adolescence he was much more interested in poetry. During the 1970s he travelled often to Rome and rediscovered his passion for visual arts. Here Cucchi met with different artists such as Sandro Chia and Francesco Clemente, who had a similar notion of art and poetry.
Together they belong to the most famous painters of the so called ‘Transavanguardia’ movement, the new ‘wild’ painting. With his paintings, drawings and sculptures Cucchi developed a unique and mysterious visual language, which contrasted the then dominant, cool and rational Postminimalism. Besides his paintings and sculptures, Cucchi also created several small format paintings which are accompanied by poetic texts.
