About the artist
Beat Zoderer completed an apprenticeship as an architectural draughtsman and worked in architectural offices from 1971 to 1978. Since 1979 he has been working as an independent artist. After two studio fellowships granted by the city of Zurich for Genoa in 1986 and New York in 1988 he was awarded the Manor Art Prize in 1995 and in 1998 he received an award from the Max Bill and Georges Vantongerloo Foundation in Zurich.
Although he is considered a Concrete artist, he often contradicts this notion with his playful and less strict approach. By avoiding the typical rationality and perfectionism of Concrete Art, he revives the genre. His creations often seem to be systematically and geometrically constructed, but only upon a closer look we start to realise that the material often does not meet our expectations. Out of folders, duct tape and other everyday material Zoderer builds complex coloured worlds, which mock the appropriateness demanded by classical Concrete artists. His installations, sculptures, assemblages and collages are constructed in ever new shapes, colours and materials.
